Barndominium or conventional custom home: how to choose
October 16, 2026
More people in Montana ask us about barndominiums than a few years ago, and the honest answer to which is better is that it depends on how you will live in the building. Here is how we think it through with owners.
Start with how you live
A barndominium puts living space, and often a shop or large garage, under one roof. If you want room for vehicles, equipment, animals' gear or hobbies right next to the house, that layout is a strength. If you want separate rooms of different heights and a more traditional floor plan, a conventional build may fit better.
Style and finish
The look of a barndominium is open and simple, and it can be finished as plainly or as richly as you like. A conventional custom home has more freedom in shape. Neither one is automatically the cheaper finished home: the finish level you choose drives the budget as much as the structure does.
Budget
Decide what you want to spend before you decide what shape to build. We ask for a rough budget on the first call so we can tell you whether the project you are picturing fits it, and which choices matter most.
Talk to your lender early
Not every lender treats every kind of building the same way. Ask yours early how they handle the structure you are considering, before plans are drawn.
We build both
We build custom homes and barndominiums across Gallatin, Jefferson, Madison and Park Counties. If you are undecided, that is a fine place to start the conversation.
